Matt Nelson

Director of Energy Policy, Walmart

Matt Nelson serves as the Director of Energy Policy at Walmart, a position he has held since April 2023. In this role, he leads the development and implementation of energy strategies with a strong focus on electric vehicles (EVs) and sustainability. Nelson plays a key role in advancing Walmart’s commitment to renewable energy and reducing its environmental footprint. He is actively engaged in shaping public policy to support EV infrastructure and the broader transition to electrified transportation across the U.S., contributing to initiatives that drive sustainability throughout Walmart’s operations.

Matt previously led Government Affairs for Electrify America. As the 5th employee, Matt served on the leadership team as the company launched and grew to become the largest public EV charging network in North America. In the public sector, Matt served in the Obama Administration as Chief of Staff in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). Earlier in his career, Matt served as U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein’s Senior Policy Advisor and staffed Congressman Tom Allen (ME-1) on the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Matt earned a Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. He lives with his family in Northern Virginia.
